Description/Highlights The Alhambra Urban Community is 45-acre, 1,000,000 million-square foot “urban community” situated in a campus-style setting in Alhambra. Several thousand people people work or visit the facility every day with major tenants such as USC Keck School of Medicine, Southwest Administrators, Tenet Healthcare and AT&T. The facility is well-known for its classic brick buildings and beautiful gardens and vegetation. The project featured removal of extensive areas of turf vegetation and water intensive plants and flowers, planting of water-wise vegetation installation of water-efficient irrigation equipment. The facility is LEED Gold certified, generates 25% of its electricity via fuel cells. This drought-tolerant landscaping project has contributed greatly to an overall reduction in irrigation water usage of 85%.

Funding Grant funding provided by San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District. The Ratkovich Company provided in-kind resources.
Featured Vegetation Low-water vegetation including California Native plants, grasses and water-wise succulents. Hardscapes including mulch, rocks and benches/furniture were also installed in place of water-intensive vegetation.
